The tally of foreign visitors arriving in Vietnam surged year-on-year within the first quarter, reaching an already previously announced target of about a third of the country’s 2023 target of 8 million. That followed data posted by Vietnam’s General Statistics Office before even the last day of the quarter.
Nearly 2.7 million foreigners arrived in Vietnam within the first quarter, according to information from the Office for National Statistics. This is 29.7 times (2,045.2%) higher than the same period last year.
Most of them, just over 2.42 million people, came by air. 241,900 people came by road and 33,700 by sea.
Only 1.94 million (71.9%) of Vietnam’s first-quarter arrivals this year came from other parts of Asia.
Vietnam has a casino industry, and all but one location is open to foreigners.
Vietnam eased several entry conditions as early as March last year, one of the first Southeast Asian countries to try to normalize travel after COVID-19. Vietnam received 3.6 million foreign tourists last year, about 20% of its pre-pandemic figure.
Recently, local news outlet VnExpress reported that passport holders in some countries could see their eVISA stay extended to three months, where they can now receive a one-month Vietnamese visa for a single entry. Such a proposal was tabled by the Vietnamese government and will be discussed at the National Assembly in May.
Several Vietnamese airlines were scheduled to resume flights between Vietnam and cities in mainland China sometime in March, the same news outlet recently reported.
In the fall, Vietnam and China agreed to boost bilateral cooperation on “cross-border gambling,” among several law enforcement topics.
